| Wasatch Jr. High Soars Above Peers |
The prevailing attitude toward Utah junior high schools seems to be
that they are places for hormone-crazed young people to cool their
heels between elementary school and high school. Look at the test
scores. Considering the favorable demographics for Clayton Junior
High, its core total score of 60 on the Iowa test is an abomination.
But Wasatch Junior High has never bought into the idea that they
are warehousing teen-agers. It has been a leader in middle school
math and science instruction for decades. Salt Lake City real estate
values depend on good schools like this one.

"Wasatch Junior High was opened in 1959. Enrollment reached a
peak of 1,559 students in 1962. In recent years, enrollment has
averaged about 900. In the district, Wasatch has consistently
received the highest SAT scores and emphasized strong academics.
Wasatch has networked classrooms and a computer lab with Utah
Link (Internet). Computers are now available in the business
program, and students can register for word processing classes. A
writing lab is also available. The emphasis school wide is to teach
technology through the curriculum. Parents may access student
grades and attendance with the internet."
