Sugar House Utah: Millcreek Canyon
|
A ride up Millcreek Canyon takes you far from civilization
|
The Log Haven restaurant is a few miles up the canyon.
The Thayne Canyon trail climbs 2,500 feet in 2 miles.
When it's broiling in the valley, Millcreek Canyon's hiking trails offer cool, green relief.
The canyon road is blocked off halfway up during the winter. It's a great
place to practice cross-country skiing.
The canyon
winds into the
Wasatch Front at
about 3900
South. The
farther up you
go, the wilder it
gets. Moose,
bear, cougars,
elk, deer,
coyotes, foxes
and varmints too
numerous to list
all live in its
upper reaches.
Rattlesnakes are
common along
Church Fork
closer to the
bottom. The
canyon has
miles of hiking
and mountain
biking trails, and
road-bikers are
common
year-round on
the
pavement. About five
miles up is Log Haven,
a great restaurant that
is popular with
wedding parties. The
road is closed about
halfway up for the
winter, when skiers
abound. In late spring,
when the road is free
of snow but still
closed, it's the best
place in the Salt Lake
area for a bike ride.
From my house in
Sugar House, it takes
me about 20 minutes
on a mountain bike to
reach the canyon
mouth. Is there any
other million-person
area in the country so
close to peaceful,
gorgeous wilderness?
A view from the Desolation Canyon trail.
Millcreek Canyon boasts true wilderness.
The hillsides along the Thayne Canyon trail are carpeted in greenery in early summer 2008.
