Salt Lake City's Sugar House expert
|
I was born in 1959 in Cheverly, Md. I have
lived in Maryland, Tennessee, West Illinois,
Missouri and Georgia, so my love of Sugar
House, Utah, does not come from a lack of
perspective. I came to Utah in 1977 to
attend the University of Utah and
graduated with a degree in journalism. I
spent my early career as an editor with the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution and as an
editor and editorial writer with The Salt
Lake Tribune. I have enjoyed my work in
real estate much more, especially getting
to know new people. When I get some free
time I hike and bike in the foothills above
Sugar House. I tend to spend my vacation
time a little farther south. Hasta la vista.
My lovely wife, Alison, in Zion Park. She is an athletic
hiker who has walked me into the ground more than
once. We've been married 25 years.
From the top of Angel Island in the Gulf of
California, my good friend Gil Gillenwater
surveys the miles of Sonoran desert he just
crossed on a hike from the sea to the peak. Gil
runs an amazing charity based in Agua Prieta,
Mexico, called Rancho Feliz. Gil's no bleeding
heart dreamer, and he has never made a dime
for his charity work. His organization is just plain
effective. Click on the link above to read more.
My kids Hannah and Peter in 2007. Hannah's at Utah
State University. Peter's at the University of Utah.
To the left is Torie, my 9-year-old
mastiff mix. She has a very tough life.
The sun rises off the south flank of Navajo Mountain, as seen from the Kaibab Plateau just
north of the Grand Canyon. I like to go here in the summer to beat the heat.
One of the coolest of the million or so statues of
Simon Bolivar in Venezuela. This one's in Mucuchies,
in the Andes. Click here for more Venezuela photos.
The whole Millson family on a Christmas Day hike in 2010. Alison
and I are proud as can be of Hannah, 18, and Peter, 21.
National Park, and it's especially cool in winter.
In case you were wondering about conditions on
the East Rim Trail in Zion this winter, at left is a view
on Jan. 25, 2009. Troy Gillenwater, Alison, Troy's
girlfriend Nancy and I slogged out of Echo Canyon
to the top of the mesa, and we just beat a blizzard
back to the car. It was a tough hike but beautiful,
and we didn't see another footprint, much less
another person.

Cowlitz glacier

Rainier in late
August 2010.
That's me in
the middle of
the line. My
son and I
made it to the
top after
training for a
week with a

We hiked around the north side of Navajo Mountain to
Rainbow Bridge in May 2010. What a great hike. Click
here for a few more photos. If you're interested, I'll tell
you how to arrange this logistically tricky hike.
This is the summit of Mount Triglav in Slovenia's
Julian Alps in September 2010. We went there to
celebrate a 50th birthday.
