At little zoo, quality
trumps quantity
Tucked in a hollow at the
mouth of Emigration
Canyon, Hogle Zoo is about
the size of Chicago's
Lincoln Park Zoo.
Politicians who covet the
site for development have
long complained that it is
too small. I couldn't
disagree more. It sits on
Emigration Creek, with
50-year-old shade trees
towering overhead. And
while it doesn't have the
most animals of any zoo in
America, it usually boasts
some of the rarest. In
February 2008, one of 10
white alligators in the
world made its home at
Hogle. The zoo also has an
Amur leopard, the rarest
big cat in the world. Less
than 40 exist in the wild.
Hogle is justifiably proud of
its accreditation by the
Association of Zoos and
Aquariums. Less than 10
percent of the 2,000
USDA-licensed wildlife
exhibits have the
accreditation. It is open all
year. Visit on a winter
morning and you might
have the place to yourself.
Morning is the best time to
see the animals get fed.
The zoo is open from 9-5
March through October
and 9-4 November through
February. It's an easy walk
from the Oak Hills/St. Marys
area and a short bike ride
from the rest of Sugar
House. For more
information, call 582-1631
or visit the
zoo website.
The Amur leopard is the most endangered leopard species in the world.
Less than 40 remain in the wild, so it's a safe bet that Hogle Zoo's is the
only one you'll ever see. This video is best viewed in Internet Explorer,
though it takes forever to load.
